April 7 of each year marks the celebration of World Health Day, a global observance that raises awareness and highlights priority areas of concern in public health. The world remains deeply unequal, and the conditions in which people live, work, and grow can significantly affect their ability to achieve their full health potential. Health inequities are not only unjust and unfair, but they also threaten progress made toward improving health outcomes and can widen existing gaps in access to care.

Khuwaja Welfare Association (KWA Pakistan) works predominantly in remote villages across the Thatta and Tharparkar districts of Sindh, Pakistan. A key focus of our work in these rural communities is improving access to essential healthcare. The Khuwaja Medical Center, inaugurated in April 2020 in Jungshahi, Thatta District, provides low-cost medical care to underserved communities and advances our mission of promoting health equity. The cost of supporting each patient, including medication, is approximately 33 US cents, or 50 Pakistani rupees. A waiver is also available for patients who are unable to afford medical care. To date, the Medical Center has provided care to more than 4,000 patients from rural communities.

Our goal is to educate, empower, and provide essential resources to disadvantaged communities, helping them build healthier and more secure futures. Through our ongoing partnerships with Aga Khan Health Services, health specialists participate in onsite medical camps, providing consultations and care to patients with specific health needs. We have also partnered with HEALTHYABI, whose network of volunteers has conducted informative home-health sessions and provided training on snakebite management and other medical emergencies. These initiatives help equip rural communities with the knowledge and resources needed to prevent illness, respond to emergencies, and reduce avoidable causes of disease and death.
