During the holy month of Ramadan, KWA launched its Dastarkhwan campaign in numerous rural communities. Dastarkhwan is Turkish for “tablecloth.” Throughout Ramadan, KWA provided food for Iftaar as well as household rations to support disadvantaged communities. By the end of Ramadan, 237 Dastarkhwan’s were hosted in over 51 villages, serving around 18,000 meals.
Food security is prevalent in the rural areas of Sindh. Poverty, compounded with lack of access to essentials, poses a big challenge to populations in those areas. As a result, there is widespread malnutrition throughout these communities, especially in women, children, and the elderly. Khuwaja Welfare Association (KWA) aims to help rural communities in Sindh, Pakistan to overcome challenges related to food security and malnourishment. Currently, KWA is working on various agricultural projects in the Thatta and Tharparkar Districts. Using solar-powered wells, these projects direct water from the wells to the fields for agricultural purposes as well as to provide the community with an organic, nutritious harvest. Additionally, KWA assists various families lacking an income or access to food by providing monthly household rations.
